In today’s NFL landscape holdouts are common and necessary it is just that everyone is so much more sensitive these days after what Le’veon Bell did last year. That situation is an outlier though; Le’veon was being franchised every year while the Steelers ran him into the ground so he had every right to stand up and fight for what he absolutely was worth and deserved. That is why I get mad when Le’veons situation is being used as the barometer for all other holdouts.
Gasp! Will Ezekiel Elliot sit out this year? Of course he isn’t and he also is not in the same situation as Bell. Zeke signed a contract and was given $24M guaranteed so the Cowboys have all the leverage in this standoff. What I think is happening here is Zeke is simply playing a little cat and mouse game and saying “Hello Jerry, I’ll be there this season but be afraid if you don’t pay me this might become a reality next year”. I will guarantee once checks are starting to not be delivered and Zeke needs the appropriate time to get ready for the season he will be there. In the meantime he is putting the pressure on the organization to make sure they know what they need to do in order to keep him around during this window they have on the current roster which is full of stars. Let’s be honest here too, guys like Elliot don’t exactly come along very often and I know the Cowboys are trying to pretend they can get by with other backs but the truth of the matter is do you want 30 carries for 80 yards and maybe a TD from your backups or do you want 20 carries for 120 yards and 2 TD’s from your superstar back? It’s a no brainer, they have to sign him if they want any chance of making a deep run.
