I’m not sure there is a right answer to this question but I was watching the Mets game the other night and the announcers started talking about the historical importance of deGrom’s season in the modern baseball era. On the other hand a few TV’s over at the gym I saw the Cubs game on and it hit me, how did his 2018 season compare to the historic run Arrieta had in 2015?
As I started to break down the seasons it was amazing to me how similar they actually were. To be honest the only glaring differences were the Record (22-6 vs 10-9) which speaks more to the obscene ineptness of the Mets offense, the K’s which deGrom had 33 more in 12 less innings, and then the amount of complete games (4) and shutouts (3) that Arrieta had. This is truly splitting hairs as these are probably to of the best pitching seasons we have seen in recent memory but for me I think I have to side with deGrom. He was magical the entire year and was as consistent as you can get I mean his last 24 starts were quality starts. While Arrieta needed arguably the best half of pitching in history to complete his season I think I would prefer the consistency deGrom offered. It blows my mind he only had 10 wins, it really puts a damper on what was such a special season. Check out the stats below…What’s your vote?
