I remember a few years back walking around thinking I was big and strong and trying to show off at the gym, then came a family vacation and pictures and videos and I recall thinking how bloated and unhealthy I looked. Yes I was bigger than I had been in years but I was carrying around 190lbs of bulky weight that made me look chubbier than anything. Today I sit at 175lbs and I am as strong and can lift just as much in a much leaner and healthier figure. What was the catalyst?
Switching to a planet based diet that still gives me the calories and protein I need to build muscle. Not just big bulky muscle but healthy lean muscles that recover faster and give me more energy. There is a reason you see a trend with professional athletes switching to a vegan diet in an attempt to prolong, rejuvenate, or take their careers to the next level. Let me be perfectly honest here I am only talking to my own personal experiences and everyone needs to find out what is best for them and I respect everyone’s dietary decisions but for me pushing 40 years old with a history of high blood pressure and cholesterol even while eating what I thought was healthy becoming a vegan has been a complete game changer. I still eat a lot and don’t sacrifice calories but when I eat its good calories, its calories I know are put to good use, and they are calories I know I can turn into energy. Large meals don’t make me feel tired and lazy anymore and I always have the energy to workout and I know the next day I won’t feel exhausted and down or even as sore as I used to be since I recover faster. There is this stigma in the weightlifting world that in order to build muscle you need to eat meat and carbs and protein constantly but what people don’t get is you can get all of that from vegan and plant based substitutes and not only can you get those same levels of protein and nutrients but you can get them in a form that will benefit all aspects of your life and diet without the additives that can drag you down.
So in summary my observations lifting and workout out as a vegan are the following. You should become cleaner and feel like you have more energy, more energy leads to better and longer workouts, you should recover faster, recovering quicker helps you build more muscle and workout more frequently, and your vitals should become better which benefits you and your loved ones.
