Finally more action and less talking at the 2019 version of the MLB trade deadline. In a blockbuster move the Indians acquired OF Yasiel Puig and LHP Scott Moss from the Cincinnati Reds, and OF Franmil Reyes, LHP Logan Allen, and INF Victor Nova from San Diego Padres while Bauer will be dealing and throwing balls into the parking lot in Cincy and Taylor Trammell will join the stockpile of prospects in San Diego. So who wins this deal?
Let’s lay out a few facts, Bauer is a Cy young type talent as he proved last year and will be added to a staff that is already exceeding expectations this year but what does that do for a team that is 6.5 games out of the wild card and a guy that will need a boat load of money to stick around in 2021 and beyond? I doubt Bauer wants to pitch in that ballpark over the next 5+ years. As far as the Indians Puig is purely a rental, there is a 0% chance he resigns with Cleveland but then again the Indians have turned their season around and are on the path for another post season. Do the Indians think some of the young arms they brought up or a returning Danny Salazar can replace Bauer though? Wishful thinking but Puig is definitely an upgrade in the outfield and lineup. Finally the Padres, to me this is the biggest lottery ticket move of this entire deal. Trammell is a potential star who has flashed top of the lineup speed and on base skills but a guy that is struggling this year. The Padres are in a very fortunate situation in that they have a ton of prospects so dealing one in Allen is not going to hurt them long term while Trammell will and should be a major upgrade on the made for DH role Reyes. Honestly I think this is a pretty good trade all the way around but if I was forced to make a call I’d say that I love how the Padres continue to build that system and put them on a path for success long term as well as short term with the amount of trade chips they have. Building around the likes of Machado, Tatis Jr., Paddack, Urias, Mejia, and Gore with the flexibility to add big league ready impact players should have the fans in San Diego excited.
