Why Andrew Luck did the right thing but in the wrong way

I applaud Andrew Luck for his recent decision to retire; it takes a lot of guts to do what he did and not only face the backlash from fans and the media but to leave tens of millions of dollars on the table between salary and endorsements.  I also applauded Calvin Johnson when he made the same decision back in 2016, granted I am a Lions fan so it was devastating but NFL players take an absolute beating that no human could ever understand.   Week in and week out they are pummeled and the injuries both reported and un-reported mount up.  The damage to one’s body during a full 16+ week season is something humans were not made to endure and those injuries as are well documented don’t ever leave you.  So if someone who has made lots of money and saved enough to provide for their family for generations to come wants to call it quits then all the power to you, do it.  Get out while you can.  To be honest I am surprised that it doesn’t happen more frequently.  The one thing that kind of rubbed me the wrong way though was that initial reports claimed he was “mentally exhausted”.  I would have much rather he came out and said his body was beginning to breakdown or that he wanted to spend more time with his family which are both valid reasons.  “Mentally exhausted” seems like an excuse to me, who isn’t mentally exhausted? Do you think the average American working 70 hours a week to make ends meet raising multiple children sometimes by themselves isn’t mentally exhausted?  What they don’t have is the luxury to just quit, they aren’t multi-millionaires and they need to put food on the table so they can’t stroll into work today and be all “Sorry Boss, I’m out…and by the way can you send me my signing bonus by the end of next week!”. So I think the way the news came out was a little selfish which is why you are seeing members of the media jump at him when his real reasons are just and right.  I wish Luck only the best of Luck (sorry it’s impossible to avoid that) and have a feeling we aren’t seeing the last of him.
